Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area spans 715 acres in Stephenson County, northwestern Illinois, just west of Route 73 near Lena and six miles south of the Wisconsin border, centered around a scenic 40-acre man-made lake completed in 1956.
Named from a contest blending "Lena" and the Latin "aqua" for water, it was developed starting in 1948 to offer local recreation, featuring rolling hills, oak-hickory forests, grasslands planted with millet, sunflowers, and wheat for wildlife, plus a swimming beach, fishing docks, and electric-motor boating.
Visitors enjoy over 10 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, year-round camping options including RV, tent, equestrian, and youth group sites, picnicking, hunting on 560 acres, and abundant wildlife in managed habitats with prescribed burns.
