Lake Mead

Lake Mead, Arizona, United States

Lake

Lake Mead is a large reservoir created by the construction of Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, located in both Nevada and Arizona.

Built during the 1930s, the dam and resulting lake were designed to control flooding, store water, and generate hydroelectric power for the southwestern United States. Named after Elwood Mead, the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation during its construction, Lake Mead stretches about 110 miles with a capacity of approximately 28 million acre-feet. The lake submerged several small towns and archaeological sites, including the "Lost City," when it filled behind the dam.

It lies within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, established in 1936 as the former Boulder Dam Recreation Area, and offers diverse recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. The region is geologically rich, shaped by ancient sea beds, volcanic activity, and desert landscapes, creating a unique environment blending water and arid terrain that attracts millions of visitors annually.
