Park
Lake Oroville State Recreation Area surrounds Lake Oroville, the large reservoir created by Oroville Dam, and is a major Northern California destination for boating, fishing, swimming and shoreline recreation.
When full the lake covers roughly 15,500 surface acres with about 167 miles of shoreline, creating many secluded coves for boating, kayaking and picnics while the North Forebay and Thermalito Forebay provide calmer areas for non‑powered craft and family swimming with seasonal lifeguards.
The park includes multiple day‑use beaches, marinas and boat launches, developed campgrounds and group picnic sites, an interpretive visitor center with exhibits and a 47‑foot viewing tower overlooking the dam, and extensive trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding into surrounding oak‑covered hills.
Lake Oroville is also known for excellent bass and trout fishing (seasonal stocking and regulations apply), nearby Feather Falls and other scenic attractions, and a mixture of facilities and seasonal rules—so visitors should check current water levels, hours, boat restrictions and fees before planning a trip.
