Lake Powell is a large man-made reservoir in northern Arizona and southern Utah, created when the Glen Canyon Dam was completed in 1963 on the Colorado River.
Named after explorer John Wesley Powell, it is the second largest reservoir in the United States by capacity and can hold over 26 million acre-feet of water. The lake stretches through a dramatic landscape of sandstone canyons and offers a recreation area popular for boating, fishing, and hiking along its nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline.
It plays a critical role in water storage for the Upper Colorado River Basin states and releases water downstream to lower basin states under the federal “Law of the River.”
