Reservoir
Lake Powell is a large man-made reservoir located primarily in southern Utah, with portions extending into northern Arizona.
It was created in 1963 by the construction of Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River, which flooded Glen Canyon and formed one of the largest reservoirs in the United States. Named after the explorer John Wesley Powell, who famously navigated the Colorado River in 1869, Lake Powell extends over 186 miles of waterway and more than 1,900 miles of shoreline, featuring spectacular red rock canyons and unique geological formations.
The lake serves critical purposes such as water storage for seven Western states, hydroelectric power generation, and flood control, while also being a popular recreational area known for boating, fishing, and hiking. Over time, sediment buildup has posed challenges to its storage capacity, and Lake Powell is often central to discussions on environmental conservation and water resource management in the Colorado River Basin.
