Park
Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park, in northeastern Minnesota near the south shore of massive Lake Vermilion, combines over 4,000 acres of rugged forests, old-growth pines, exposed rock formations like red jasper and hematite, and Minnesota's oldest, deepest, and richest iron mine, which operated from 1882 until 1962 and reaches 2,341 feet underground.
Donated to the state in 1963 and merged with Lake Vermilion State Park in 2014, it offers popular hardhat tours via a 1924 hoist cage to explore historic mine levels, drifts, and stopes, plus exhibits on mining life and former physics labs. Visitors also hike trails like the 2.4-mile Miners’ Trail past open pits, camp year-round, boat or fish the lake for walleye and pike, and spot birds amid its glacial terrain.
