Little Diomede Island

Little Diomede Island, Alaska, United States

Island

Little Diomede Island, also known as Yesterday Island and called Iŋaliq by the native Iñupiaq people, is a small inhabited island in the Bering Strait about 16 miles off the Alaskan mainland.

It is the smaller of the two Diomede Islands, separated by just 2.4 miles of water from Russia's Big Diomede Island, making it one of the closest points between the United States and Russia. The island covers about 2.8 square miles and features rugged terrain with steep cliffs and scant vegetation. The single village of Diomede lies on the western shore.

Historically, the island's residents maintained close ties with neighbors on Big Diomede until the border closure during the Cold War. It has a harsh Arctic climate with cold temperatures and persistent winds.

Access is primarily by helicopter since past ice runways for planes have become unusable due to thinning ice caused by climate change. The island is notable for its unique geography, cultural heritage, and proximity to the International Date Line, earning the nicknames "Yesterday Island" and "Tomorrow Island" for the two Diomedes.
