Historical Landmark
Longwood, located in Natchez, Mississippi, is a unique antebellum mansion known for its octagonal shape and striking Byzantine onion dome.
Built in 1860 by wealthy cotton planter Dr. Haller Nutt and designed by Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan, it was intended to be a grand six-story home with 32 rooms and over 30,000 square feet of living space. Construction abruptly stopped in 1861 due to the outbreak of the Civil War, when the Northern craftsmen left, leaving the upper floors unfinished and exposing the interior framework.
The Nutt family continued living in the completed basement level for decades. The mansion's more than one million bricks were made on-site, and many furnishings were imported from Europe, though many shipments were seized during the war.
Longwood is preserved as a National Historic Landmark, and visitors today can tour both the finished and unfinished sections, experiencing a rare historical snapshot of Southern wealth halted by conflict.
