Louisiana's Old State Capitol

Louisiana's Old State Capitol, Louisiana, United States

Museum

Louisiana's Old State Capitol, located in Baton Rouge, was completed in 1852 to serve as the seat of the state government.

Designed by architect James H. Dakin, it is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture resembling a medieval castle, which earned it nicknames like the "Castle on the River." It originally replaced New Orleans as the state capital due to concerns about flood risks and political balance.

The building was heavily damaged during the Civil War when Union troops occupied it and allowed fires to ravage the interior, leaving only the exterior walls intact. It was rebuilt in the 1880s with enhancements such as a stained-glass dome and a winding cast-iron staircase. The Old State Capitol witnessed many significant events in Louisiana’s political history, including the impeachment trial of Governor Huey P. Long in 1926.

The state government moved to a newer Capitol building in 1932, and the Old Capitol was later restored and converted into a museum that educates the public on Louisiana’s political history and democratic process. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark and a cultural symbol of the state’s rich heritage and turbulent past.
