Park
Machicomoco State Park is Virginia's 40th state park and the first dedicated to honoring the state's Native American tribes, spanning 645 acres in southern Gloucester County along the York River near Hayes, about 10 miles downriver from the historic Werowocomoco site central to the Powhatan Chiefdom. Named from an Algonquian word meaning "a special meeting place," it features archaeological evidence of indigenous use from 2000 BCE including ancient shell middens, an open-air interpretive pavilion with exhibits on Virginia Indian culture, landscape, and history, plus the preserved 1793 Timberneck House, walking paths, and maritime forests, marshes, and wetlands. Acquired through a transmission line mitigation project and opened in 2021, it emphasizes ecological restoration, tribal involvement in design, and natural resources for quiet exploration, picnicking, and learning, open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk.
