Mary Todd Lincoln House

Mary Todd Lincoln House, Kentucky, United States

Historical Place Museum

The Mary Todd Lincoln House in Lexington, Kentucky, was the girlhood home of Mary Todd, who later became the wife of President Abraham Lincoln.

Built around 1803-1806 originally as an inn called "The Sign of the Green Tree," it was purchased by Mary’s father, Robert Smith Todd, and became the family residence in 1832. Mary lived there until 1839 when she moved to Illinois, where she met and married Lincoln. The house has fourteen rooms furnished with period pieces, portraits, and artifacts related to the Todd and Lincoln families, reflecting Mary’s upbringing in a wealthy, politically connected, slave-holding family.

It was the first historic site in the U.S. restored in honor of a First Lady and opened as a museum in 1977. The museum highlights Mary Todd Lincoln’s complex life, including her early years, social status, personal struggles, and her later reclusive period as a widow. A garden featuring plants typical of the era has also been restored at the site.
