National Reserve
Mauna Kea Ice Age Natural Area Reserve covers 3,894 acres on the southern summit flank of Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaiʻi Island, Hawaii, USA, established in 1981 to protect unique glacial remnants from 13,000-70,000 years ago including moraines, grooves, and cinder cones shaped by ancient ice.
This high-elevation desert features Hawaiʻi's only alpine lake at Lake Waiau, rare invertebrate-dominated aeolian communities, and the massive Mauna Kea Adze Quarry—the world's largest primitive stone quarry used by Native Hawaiians for basalt tools, shrines, trails, and petroglyphs.
Sparsely vegetated with lava and cinder landscapes up to 13,000 feet, it preserves endangered species habitats like the ʻuaʻu bird and wēkiu bugs amid stark geological wonders, accessible by permit for respectful exploration.
