Meadow Brook Hall, located in Rochester Hills, Michigan, is a grand Tudor Revival mansion built between 1926 and 1929 by Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of auto pioneer John Dodge, and her second husband Alfred Wilson.
The mansion covers 88,000 square feet and includes 110 rooms, making it the fourth largest historic house museum in the United States. Known for its exquisite craftsmanship and architectural details such as ornate plaster ceilings and stonework, Meadow Brook Hall was modeled after stately English manors and includes modern amenities for its time like central heating and elevators.
The estate originally covered 1,500 acres with multiple buildings and gardens. In 1957, the Wilsons donated Meadow Brook Hall and the surrounding land, along with $2 million, to Michigan State University to help establish what is now Oakland University.
The mansion is recognized as a National Historic Landmark since 2012 and now operates as a museum and cultural center, offering tours and events that showcase its rich history and significance to Michigan’s automotive heritage and architectural legacy.
