Glacier
Mendenhall Glacier is a striking, approximately 13-mile-long glacier located about 12 miles from Juneau in southeastern Alaska.
It flows from the vast Juneau Icefield, a snowy highland area where snow accumulates and compresses into ice, which then slowly moves downhill. The glacier's front is about 1.5 miles wide and more than 100 feet high, terminating in Mendenhall Lake, a body of water formed around 1929 due to the glacier's melting. Over the past century, the glacier has been steadily retreating, pulling back about 1.75 miles since then, a clear indication of ongoing climate change effects.
The surrounding area, part of Tongass National Forest, is protected and features a visitor center offering educational exhibits and trails for close views of the glacier, including spots where icebergs calve into the lake.
This retreat has also exposed old growth forests that are rich with salmon and trout ecosystems, illustrating a dynamic relationship between ice, water, and local wildlife. Although there may be occasional periods of snow accumulation at the glacier's higher elevations, the general trend is one of thinning and withdrawal, making Mendenhall Glacier both a natural wonder and a symbol of environmental change.
