Park
Montaña de Oro State Park (Spanish for "Mountain of Gold") is an expansive coastal reserve near Morro Bay that covers about 8,000 acres of rugged cliffs, seven miles of shoreline, sandy beaches, dunes, coastal plains, canyons and hills including Valencia Peak (about 1,347 feet), offering dramatic ocean views and abundant wildflower displays in spring.
The park’s extensive trail network (dozens of miles) supports hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, while Spooner’s Cove and other beaches provide tidepools, surfing and picnic spots and a small primitive campground sits near the visitor center for overnight stays.
Wildlife includes shorebirds, marine mammals offshore and typical coastal mammals and raptors on the bluffs, the historic Spooner Ranch House now serves as a visitor hub, and visitors should be prepared for wind and rapidly changing coastal weather and check current access, trail and facility details before going.
