National Reserve
Montezuma Castle National Monument in Camp Verde, Arizona, protects a well-preserved cliff dwelling built by the Sinagua people around 1100 to 1425 CE.
The five-story structure with 20 rooms is built into a limestone alcove about 100 feet above Beaver Creek and is one of the best-preserved pre-Columbian dwellings in the U.S. Despite its name, it has no connection to the Aztec emperor Montezuma—the misnomer arose from early settlers' mistaken beliefs.
The monument covers 860 acres, including Montezuma Well, a nearby artesian spring surrounded by additional ancient structures. Visitors can follow a paved 1/3 mile trail around the base to view the cliff dwelling, but the interior is closed to protect it from damage.
A visitor center offers exhibits on Sinagua culture and artifacts. Montezuma Castle was designated as one of the first U.S. national monuments by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 and attracts about 400,000 tourists annually, highlighting its cultural, historical, and archaeological significance.
