Memorial Park
The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, is a solemn outdoor park dedicated to honoring the 184 people who lost their lives when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
Opened on September 11, 2008, the two-acre site stands just outside the Pentagon at the point of impact. Designed by architects Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman, the memorial features 184 cantilevered stainless steel benches, each engraved with a victim’s name and suspended over a lighted reflecting pool.
The benches are arranged along an age line, from the youngest victim, three-year-old Dana Falkenberg, to the oldest, seventy-one-year-old John Yamnicky. Each bench faces a direction symbolizing whether the victim was inside the Pentagon or aboard the plane.
Surrounding the benches are 85 Paperbark Maple and Crape Myrtle trees that grow up to 30 feet tall, along with an Age Wall that gradually rises in height to represent the victims’ ages. The memorial is open to the public day and night throughout the year and is the only place within the Pentagon grounds where photography is permitted.
It provides a peaceful and reflective environment where visitors can pay tribute to those who died and contemplate the events of that tragic day.
