State Government Office
The New Mexico State Capitol, also known as the Roundhouse, was constructed between 1964 and 1966 in Santa Fe and is the newest state capitol building in the U.S.
Its design, by local architect W.C. Kruger, blends New Mexico Territorial Revival style with neoclassical elements, symbolizing the Zia sun symbol visible from above with four protruding wings. The building features 232,346 square feet across four levels, including one underground, and houses legislative chambers, the governor's offices, and extensive marblework.
It replaced earlier capitol buildings dating back to 1850 and embraces regional heritage with stucco facades, brick cornices, and stone carvings of the state seal above each entrance. The interior centers around a domed rotunda with terrazzo floors and wood paneling, reflecting a compromise between modernist architecture and traditional New Mexican style.
