Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse in Michigan, built in 1892, served as a vital navigational aid guiding ships through the often treacherous Straits of Mackinac, where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet.
It was constructed following Congress’s 1889 authorization, replacing an earlier fog signal station built in 1890. The lighthouse features a distinctive cream-colored brick tower and attached keeper’s dwelling and was equipped with a powerful Fresnel lens visible up to 16 miles away.
It was operational until 1957 when the completion of the nearby Mackinac Bridge, which illuminated the straits, made the light obsolete. After deactivation, the site was acquired by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission and was carefully restored over several decades, reopening to the public in 2004.
Now part of the Fort Michilimackinac complex, the lighthouse operates as a maritime museum displaying the original lens, interprets shipwreck history through exhibits, and offers visitors tours of the tower with panoramic views, providing a glimpse into maritime heritage and the lives of lighthouse keepers who safeguarded this crucial passage.
