Nature Reserve
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in southern Arizona is a sprawling 517-square-mile desert preserve and UNESCO biosphere reserve known for protecting the northernmost natural habitat of the rare organ pipe cactus.
Established in 1937, the monument features rugged Sonoran Desert landscapes including mountains, valleys, and washes, and is home to over 2,000 plant species such as saguaros, ocotillos, and rare cacti, alongside diverse wildlife including desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, and more than 250 bird species.
Nearly 95% of the monument is designated wilderness, offering opportunities for hiking, scenic drives, camping, and stargazing under some of the darkest night skies in the U.S. The area also holds cultural significance for Indigenous peoples like the Tohono O’odham.
With trails of varying difficulty, visitors can explore natural beauty, historic mining sites, and the critical desert ecosystem that thrives despite extreme heat and scarce water.
