Beach
Point Sal State Beach is a remote, rugged coastal area on the northwestern edge of Santa Barbara County near Guadalupe that protects roughly 80 acres and about 1.5 miles of rocky shoreline and sandy beach with dramatic cliffs, tidepools and offshore rocks used by seabirds and marine mammals.
Access is limited—the coastal road has washed out and the beach is reached only by a strenuous out‑and‑back hike of roughly 10–12 miles round trip with significant elevation change (or by long coastal approaches), so there are no vehicle, bicycle or camping facilities on site.
The shoreline and adjacent slopes support diverse coastal habitats and spring wildflowers, and popular activities are hiking, birdwatching, fishing and photography rather than swimming (strong rip currents, absence of lifeguards and occasional shark sightings make swimming hazardous).
Facilities are minimal to nonexistent (no restrooms or picnic tables), access is daylight‑only and subject to occasional temporary closures or military restrictions nearby, and visitors should plan carefully, bring water and navigation aids, check current park notices and tide information, and avoid hazardous cliffs and unstable slopes.
