Natural Feature
Pompeys Pillar is a prominent natural sandstone butte in Montana that rises nearly 150 feet above the Yellowstone River valley and covers about an acre at its base.
It is famous for bearing the only remaining physical inscription by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, consisting of Captain William Clark’s signature and the date July 25, 1806. Clark named the formation "Pompey's Tower" after Sacagawea’s son, nicknamed "Pomp," with the name later changed to Pompeys Pillar.
The site also contains numerous Native American petroglyphs and has served as a historic landmark for over 11,000 years. Designated a national monument in 2001, it includes a visitor center with exhibits interpreting the expedition and the area's cultural history, making it a significant natural and historical feature in Montana.
