Mountain Range
The Porcupine Mountains, often called the Porkies, are a small mountain range located in Michigan's northwestern Upper Peninsula along the southern shore of Lake Superior.
Known for their rugged beauty, the mountains feature the largest block of old-growth northern hardwood forest in North America west of the Adirondacks, spanning about 31,000 acres. The range includes Summit Peak, the highest point at 1,958 feet, and is famous for its stunning Lake of the Clouds vista, a sharp basalt escarpment, and numerous waterfalls.
The area is part of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, Michigan's largest state park, established to protect its pristine forests, rivers, and glacially carved shorelines. The park offers more than 90 miles of hiking trails, camping, cross-country skiing, and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. The region is also known for heavy lake-effect snow in winter, making it a notable destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking unspoiled natural landscapes and year-round recreation.
