Isle Royale National Park

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, United States

National Park

Isle Royale National Park, located in the northwest corner of Lake Superior, Michigan, was authorized by Congress in 1931 and officially established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 3, 1940.

The park was created to preserve a prime example of North Woods wilderness, consisting of the large main island, about 450 smaller islands, and surrounding waters, with over 99% of its land designated as wilderness. Indigenous peoples, especially the Ojibwa, lived on and used the island for thousands of years, mining copper and sustaining themselves through hunting and fishing.

European explorers, traders, and missionaries arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries, followed by limited mining and logging in the 19th century. Recognizing the island’s ecological and historical value, conservationists pushed for its protection, which was realized through its national park status.

Since then, Isle Royale has been protected as a wilderness area, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and is renowned for its unique natural environment and long-running ecological studies, notably involving its wolf and moose populations
