The Portland Observatory in Maine, built in 1807 by retired sea captain Lemuel Moody, is the only remaining maritime signal tower of its kind in the United States.
Located on Munjoy Hill in Portland, it was constructed as a vital communication point for the bustling Portland Harbor, allowing ship owners to communicate incoming vessels to merchants onshore up to three hours before the ships arrived. The 86-foot tall, octagonal wooden tower, built with shipbuilding techniques using Maine white pine and a heavy rubble stone foundation, has six levels topped by an observation deck where a powerful telescope once helped spot vessels up to 30 miles out to sea.
The Observatory played a key role in the harbor's prosperity during the "Golden Age of Sail" and later served as a watchtower during the War of 1812 and World War II. It is listed as a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Today, operated as a museum and historic site by Greater Portland Landmarks, it offers visitors insight into Portland’s maritime history and architectural heritage, with exhibits explaining its importance in early ship-to-shore communication before radio technology. The tower’s preservation and ongoing educational programs make it a distinctive landmark reflecting Portland’s rich nautical past
