Park
Portola Redwoods State Park is a secluded 2,800‑acre redwood canyon in San Mateo County where cool, fern‑lined ravines and old‑growth and second‑growth coast redwoods shelter creeks that support coho salmon and steelhead trout.
The park offers roughly 18 miles of mostly shady trails including the Peters Creek Loop (which reaches the largest grove and remote old trees) plus shorter walks to the “Old Tree” near the headquarters, seasonal waterfalls, picnic areas, a small car‑campground and group campsites, and backcountry sites on the Slate Creek Trail for overnight backpacking.
With fewer crowds than larger Bay Area parks, the site highlights natural history and quiet recreation, but trails can be steep or muddy, some creek crossings are seasonal, and visitors should check current access, trail conditions and campsite reservation rules before going.
