Ski Resort
Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort in Middlefield, Connecticut, opened initially in 1959 as Powder Hill and later became Powder Ridge in 1970.
It was founded by Louis and Herman Zemel and quickly grew from surface lifts to include multiple chairlifts, including New England’s first quad chairlift called the “747 lift.” The resort was famous for night skiing and hosted ski clubs in partnership with local schools.
In 1970, it was also planned to host the Powder Ridge Rock Festival, which was canceled last minute but became infamous when thousands still showed up expecting a Woodstock-like event. The ski area faced various financial and expansion challenges over the years, including a failed water park proposal and multiple changes in ownership, leading to a closure in 2007.
After being foreclosed and purchased by the town, it was sold to Brownstone Exploration & Discovery Park, reopening in 2013 as a four-season destination offering skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, paintball, water slides, and other activities. The resort combines winter sports with summer recreation facilities, including an elegant lodge with dining and meeting spaces, making it a popular year-round resort in Connecticut.
