Historical Place
Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park in Hawaii is a sacred site that served as a place of refuge or sanctuary where Hawaiians who broke kapu, the ancient laws, could avoid death by fleeing there until absolved by a priest.
It also offered protection to defeated warriors and noncombatants during battles. The park preserves a complex of archaeological sites including the Great Wall, royal fishponds, sledding tracks, and coastal village remains, with reconstructed temples like the Hale o Keawe serving as a mausoleum for chiefs.
This 420-acre park, originally established as the City of Refuge National Historical Park in 1955 and renamed in 1978, is one of the few places where the Hawaiian flag can fly alone without the American flag.
The park continues to be a place of cultural significance, offering visitors insight into traditional Hawaiian lifeways, spiritual customs, and history through preserved structures and interpretive programs.
