Richard Bong State Recreation Area covers 4,515 acres in Kenosha County, southeastern Wisconsin, originally planned as a jet fighter base but preserved as open space after those plans were abandoned just before construction began.
Named for Major Richard I. Bong, Wisconsin's top World War II air ace from Poplar, it features gently rolling prairies, restored grasslands, wetlands, scattered woodlands, and wildlife like great egrets, sandhill cranes, and herons. The area offers nearly 30 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, and ATVing, plus camping at two family campgrounds with 217 sites (some with electric hookups), a beach for swimming, fishing spots, and special zones for model airplanes, rockets, hot air balloons, and dog training.
