State Park
Ricketts Glen State Park in Pennsylvania covers over 13,000 acres across Luzerne, Sullivan, and Columbia counties and is renowned for its scenic waterfalls, old-growth forests, and diverse wildlife.
The park’s history dates back to the mid-19th century when Colonel R. Bruce Ricketts acquired the land for timber and later developed trails around Kitchen Creek’s series of glens and waterfalls, naming many after Native American tribes, friends, and family. The park features 22 named waterfalls, including Ganoga Falls, the highest at 94 feet, and contains a mix of northern and southern hardwood forests with trees that can be over 300 years old.
The area was once home to a hotel and logging operations, but after the decline of those industries, the land was gradually converted into a state park in the 1940s. Today, visitors enjoy hiking extensive trails, camping, fishing, and experiencing some of Pennsylvania’s most breathtaking natural landscapes amid preserved historic and ecological features.
