Bridge
The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge in New Mexico is a steel deck arch bridge spanning the Rio Grande Gorge about 10 miles northwest of Taos.
Completed in 1965, it stands approximately 565 feet above the river, making it one of the highest bridges in the United States. The total length is about 1,280 feet, with a 600-foot main center span flanked by two 300-foot approach spans. Designed as a continuous, cantilevered truss structure, it was constructed without the need for temporary supports due to the deep gorge it crosses.
The bridge, part of U.S. Route 64, was awarded the American Institute of Steel Construction's "Most Beautiful Steel Bridge" in 1966. It is a popular tourist site featuring sidewalks with balconies offering spectacular views of the dramatic canyon and surrounding landscape.
