Park
Saddleback Butte State Park protects a solitary, Joshua‑tree–dotted granite butte rising about 3,651 feet above the western Mojave Desert and preserves nearly 3,000 acres of high‑desert habitat on the Antelope Valley floor east of Lancaster.
The park offers hiking, equestrian use, primitive camping, picnicking and accessible short trails (including the Dowen Nature Trail), with longer, steeper routes that lead toward the butte summit for wide panoramic views and spring wildflower displays.
Visitors come for stargazing and wildlife viewing—including kit foxes, desert tortoise and native birds—while facilities are basic (drinking water, restrooms, limited campground services), seasonal conditions can be extreme, and you should check current park notices and bring plenty of water and sun protection before visiting.
