Park
Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park is a 321-acre Civil War site in Amelia and Prince Edward Counties near Rice, Virginia, USA, preserving key terrain from the April 6, 1865, Battle of Sailor's Creek where Confederate General Robert E. Lee lost nearly 7,700 men, one-quarter of his army, including eight generals, to Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant just 72 hours before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Known as the "Black Thursday of the Confederacy," the park features restored earthworks, the Hillsman House used as a Union field hospital with preserved bloodstains, walking trails through the battlefield, a visitor center with exhibits and battle brochure, and interpretive programs highlighting the decisive Union victory that cut off Lee's retreat. A National Historic Landmark since 1985, it offers picnicking and self-guided tours open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk amid rolling fields and woods central to the war's final days.
