Beach
San Gregorio State Beach is a wide, often driftwood‑strewn Pacific shoreline about 10 miles south of Half Moon Bay where San Gregorio Creek forms a small estuary behind grassy coastal bluffs, creating a mix of sandy beach, dunes and marsh habitat.
The beach is popular for beachcombing, picnicking, tidepool exploration, fishing and seasonal surfing, with a long coastal walk that continues south toward Pomponio State Beach when tides and sandbars allow. The site is ecologically important for shorebirds and the western snowy plover (dogs are prohibited), is registered as California Historical Landmark.
26 for Portolá’s 1769 expedition, and offers basic facilities like restrooms and picnic areas but no camping—visitors should check tides, parking rules and seasonal notices before visiting.
