Tourist Attraction
Sandia Peak Tramway in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a 2.7-mile aerial tramway opened in 1966, ascending the steep western face of the Sandia Mountains from 6,559 feet at the base station to 10,378 feet at the summit in about 15 minutes at 13.6 mph, carrying up to 50 passengers per car.
Constructed by Swiss engineers Bell Engineering using over 5,000 helicopter lifts for materials, it features just two towers—the 232-foot inclined Tower 1 at 7,010 feet and 80-foot Tower 2 at 8,750 feet—with the world's third-longest single span of 7,720 feet soaring 900 feet above canyons.
Riders enjoy panoramic views of the city, Rio Grande Valley, and desert, plus access to hiking trails, the Sandia Peak observation deck, restaurant, and winter skiing, with over 12 million passengers served and recent upgrades including new cars in 2016 and motors in 2024.
