Park
Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area covers 1,550 acres of rolling prairie in DeKalb County, Illinois, about 70 miles west of Chicago off U.S. 30, featuring a 318-acre man-made lake created in 1975 by damming Indian Creek.
Named for Potawatomi Chief Shabbona, it offers prime fishing for muskies, bass, crappie, and catfish from shore, piers, or rentals, plus boating, hunting, hiking trails through restored prairies and fens, camping at 150 wooded or lakefront sites, picnicking, and winter sports amid diverse habitats with migratory waterfowl.
Opened in 1978 after land acquisition from 1969, it includes a marina restaurant, bait shop, and playgrounds, providing a serene escape with native plants like big bluestem and purple coneflower, though ownership transfer to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation was authorized in March 2025.
