Tourist Attraction
Sheffield Island Lighthouse, located at the southern end of the Norwalk Islands in Norwalk, Connecticut, was first established in 1828 and sits on a 52-acre island historically known by several names including White Island and Smith Island.
The current lighthouse, built in 1868 in a picturesque Victorian style, replaced the original 30-foot stone tower and features a 44-foot cast-iron lantern tower with a Fresnel lens that helped guide ships safely into Norwalk Harbor at the entrance of Long Island Sound. The island was once a vibrant farming community maintained by Gershom Smith, the lighthouse’s first keeper, who lived there with his family and tended to livestock that sometimes wandered the nearby islands.
After the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1914, replaced by the Green’s Ledge Lighthouse, the island went through various private ownerships including the construction of a grand villa that burned down in 1946, leaving ruins visible today. The lighthouse is now a cherished historic site, part of the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors can reach it by boat from Norwalk for tours that share its maritime heritage and scenic views.
