Park
South Yuba River State Park protects about 20 miles of the wild, turquoise South Yuba River canyon in Nevada County, preserving dramatic granite ledges, natural swimming holes, historic Gold Rush sites and several 19th‑century bridges (including the Bridgeport Covered Bridge) while offering hiking, swimming, fishing, birdwatching and gold‑panning demonstrations.
The park’s patchwork lands (managed by state parks, Tahoe National Forest and partners) include the unique, wheelchair‑accessible Independence Trail, numerous trailheads along Highways 49 and 20, seasonal wildflower displays and guided nature and history programs.
Visitors should note that camping is not allowed inside most park units, parking fees apply at popular access points during busy periods, river conditions change quickly so swimming can be hazardous, and current trail, parking and safety notices should be checked before visiting.
