Strouds Run State Park encompasses 2,606 acres of rugged, unglaciated Appalachian Plateau terrain abutting Athens in Athens County, southeastern Ohio, featuring steep hillsides, narrow valleys, sandstone bluffs, rock shelters, pine and baldcypress plantations amid mature hardwood forests, beaver ponds, and the 161-acre Dow Lake created in 1960.
Named for early 1800s settler William Stroud, the land was acquired from 1948-1953 for conservation, offering 15 miles of hiking trails for birdwatching and vistas, an 8.5-mile bridle trail, mountain biking, horseback riding, boating, paddling, swimming, a seasonal campground near the lake, and abundant wildlife like deer, fox, raccoon, turkey, and songbirds. This scenic wilderness escape provides year-round nature immersion reminiscent of early Ohio's untamed hills.
