Historical Landmark
Taliesin West, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, was the winter home and desert laboratory of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright from 1937 until his death in 1959.
Designed to harmonize with the surrounding Sonoran Desert, the complex was built primarily with local stone and materials using a technique Wright called “desert masonry.” The buildings feature low-slung roofs, canvas coverings to diffuse light, and interiors with handcrafted furnishings designed by Wright and his apprentices.
The site includes Wright’s office, drafting studio, living quarters, theaters, gardens, and walkways interconnected within a 500-acre desert landscape. Taliesin West is recognized as both a National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting its architectural innovation, cultural significance, and ongoing role as the headquarters of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.
Visitors can tour the site to experience Wright’s philosophy of organic architecture, emphasizing integration with nature and hands-on learning for apprentice architects.
