Taos Pueblo in New Mexico is an ancient Native American village of the Taos-Tiwa people located about one mile north of the modern city of Taos, known as one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States with adobe multi-storied buildings likely constructed between 1000 and 1450 AD.
The pueblo is built of reddish-brown adobe along the Rio Pueblo and has maintained its traditional appearance for centuries, despite Spanish contact beginning in 1540 when explorers mistook the pueblo for one of the famed cities of Cibola.
Taos Pueblo has witnessed a long history of cultural exchanges, Spanish colonial conflicts including the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, and subsequent reconquest efforts, but remains a living community highlighted as a National Historic Landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site, embodying deep indigenous traditions, farming practices, and adobe architecture.
