Catholic Cathedral
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe, New Mexico, was built between 1869 and 1887 under Archbishop Jean Baptiste Lamy on the site of an earlier adobe church that dated back to 1714, which itself replaced an even older church destroyed in the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.
Designed in the Romanesque Revival style, it features round arches, Corinthian columns, and large rose windows imported from France, making it a striking contrast to the surrounding adobe architecture. Though the towers' steeples were never completed due to funding, the cathedral remains an iconic spiritual and architectural landmark, recognized as a basilica in 2005, and serves as the mother church of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe with a rich history reflected in preserved chapels and ornate stained glass.
