Museum
The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City began as the private library of financier J.P. Morgan, designed between 1902 and 1906 by architect Charles Follen McKim of McKim, Mead & White in a Classical Revival style using pink Tennessee marble.
The complex includes the original library building, a 1928 annex by Benjamin Wistar Morris, and the Morgan family’s former brownstone residence at 231 Madison Avenue. A major expansion and renovation completed in 2006 by Renzo Piano added underground exhibition spaces, a 299-seat auditorium, and modern amenities while preserving the historic architecture.
The museum houses an exceptional collection of manuscripts, rare books, drawings, and art, transforming the private collection into a public institution with galleries, exhibitions, a bookstore, and café. It retains its intimate palazzo feel while serving scholars, art lovers, and visitors with world-class cultural programming.
