Park
T.O. Fuller State Park, located in southwest Memphis, Tennessee—the only state park within city limits—covers 1,138 acres of forested land along Mitchell Road, originally established in 1933 as one of the nation's first parks for African Americans and renamed for educator Dr. Thomas Oscar Fuller.
Amid wetlands, bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River floodplain, and the Mississippi Flyway bird migration route hosting over 140 species, the park features an Olympic-size seasonal swimming pool, 45 RV/tent campsites with hookups, six miles of hiking trails like the 4-mile Discovery Trail to Chucalissa Indian Village and museum, picnic shelters, tennis/basketball courts, softball fields, a nature center with exhibits, and an interpretive center opened in 2017.
Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it offers urban escapes for birding, camping, and history near Graceland, despite occasional odors from a nearby wastewater facility.
