Historical Place
Tumacacori National Historical Park in southern Arizona preserves the ruins of three Spanish colonial mission communities founded in the late 17th and mid-18th centuries.
Established by Jesuit missionary Padre Eusebio Kino, the missions—San José de Tumacácori, Los Santos Ángeles de Guevavi, and San Cayetano de Calabazas—were part of Spain’s efforts to colonize and spread Christianity in the region known as the Pimería Alta.
The park showcases the adobe remains of churches, residences, orchards, and irrigation systems, reflecting the mission life and cultural exchanges between Spanish missionaries and indigenous peoples like the O’odham, Yaqui, and Apache. Tumacacori also lies along the historic Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition route. Abandoned in the 19th century, the site was preserved starting in 1908 and later designated a National Historical Park.
It is an important cultural and historical site offering insight into early colonial dynamics, Native American heritage, and desert ecology.
