Racecourse
Turf Paradise is a thoroughbred and quarter-horse racetrack located in the Deer Valley area of Phoenix, Arizona, that opened on January 7, 1956.
It was founded by Phoenix businessman Walter Cluer, who purchased 1,400 acres of desert land for the track despite skepticism about its remote location. Turf Paradise became Arizona's first organized professional sports franchise and has a racing season typically from November through April. The track features a main dirt track and an infield turf course, and it hosts the Turf Paradise Derby, a notable prep race for the Kentucky Derby.
Over the years, the facility has seen several owners and renovations, including the addition of a state-of-the-art equine swimming pool for horse therapy. Turf Paradise also developed a large off-track betting network within Arizona. More recently, there have been challenges regarding the continuation of live racing, with ownership changes and redevelopment plans impacting the track's future, though efforts to maintain horse racing at the venue continue.
Turf Paradise remains a significant part of Arizona’s horse racing history and sports culture.
