Bequeathed to the state in 1949 by Elizabeth Vaughan, a nature lover and horsewoman who cherished its wild beauty, the park features restored Hamilton House, towering old-growth pine and hemlock forests, and over three miles of interconnected hiking trails forming loops through shaded woodlands, steep slopes, river overlooks, and diverse habitats teeming with birds, wildflowers, squirrels, deer, and moose.
