Tourist Attraction
The Verde Canyon Railroad is a scenic heritage railway operating between Clarkdale and Perkinsville, Arizona, along tracks originally built in 1912 to serve copper mines in Jerome and smelters in Clarkdale.
The 40-mile round trip journey follows the winding Verde River, passing through dramatic red rock canyons, crossing bridges and trestles, and traveling through a 680-foot curved tunnel. The railroad line was purchased in 1988 by David Durbano, who revived passenger excursions in 1990 to showcase the region's natural beauty and rich mining history.
The vintage diesel locomotives, originally built for Alaska, pull classic passenger cars in a nostalgic setting. The railroad passes through Prescott and Coconino National Forests and offers stunning views of wildlife, geology, and historic mining landscapes. It carries about 100,000 passengers annually and has been recognized as a treasured Arizona attraction, highlighting both natural splendor and cultural heritage.
