National Reserve
Walnut Canyon National Monument, located about 10 miles southeast of Flagstaff, Arizona, preserves more than 300 cliff dwellings built by the Sinagua people between AD 1100 and 1250.
The canyon is approximately 400 feet deep and was carved by Walnut Creek, which supports a diverse ecosystem with plants ranging from desert cacti to pine forests. Visitors hike the 0.9-mile Island Trail, which descends into the canyon passing 25 well-preserved dwelling rooms nestled in limestone alcoves. The visitor center at the rim provides exhibits and panoramic views.
The site is significant for its archaeological, cultural, and natural heritage, hosting wildlife such as mule deer, bears, and peregrine falcons, and it remains important to several Native American tribes with ancestral ties to the region. Preservation efforts ensure protection of this unique blend of human history and natural biodiversity.
