West Branch State Park spans over 5,000 acres of land and 2,650 acres of water around the Michael J. Kirwan Reservoir in Portage County, northeastern Ohio, east of Ravenna along the west branch of the Mahoning River.
Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1965 for flood control, water supply, recreation, and wildlife, the park opened in 1966 on glaciated plateau terrain featuring meadows, woodlots, beech-maple forests, and abundant wildlife like red fox, raccoons, opossums, songbirds, and waterfowl.
Popular for boating, fishing, and swimming on the reservoir's many coves, it also offers hiking, horseback riding on nearly 20 miles of bridle trails, camping, a 700-foot sand beach, disc golf, and winter activities amid vibrant wildflowers and foliage.
